Madder Paints
PLASTIC FREE SOLVENT FREE PURE PIGMENT NO FILLER
Madder Paints are small batch oil paints made with pure pigment sourced from a Canadian supplier and hemp oil from Manitoba.
Hemp is considered a sustainable crop because it requires less water than similar crops (cotton, for example), and is a carbon drawdown (it captures carbon at a faster rate than forests).
Hemp was used historically for painting but one of the reasons it fell into disuse is its association with cannabis. They are both the species of plant Cannabis sativa but hemp contains less than 0.3% THC, the ingredient that has psychoactive effects.
Each jar is made by hand so each colour may have a slightly different texture. They can be thinned with hemp oil (included in kit), but they are compatible with other oil mediums and paints. Other possible mediums to use with them include linseed, walnut, and safflower oil, damar medium, alkyd medium, etc.
The pigments in the kit are intended to give the painter a full rainbow of colours, therefore, while they are pure pigments, they are not natural, with the exception of burnt umber. They have the same light fastness as industrially-made paints.
Colours in kit include
Alizarin Crimson (pigment registry number Pr83)
Hansa Yellow Medium (pigment registry number Py74)
Phthalo Blue green shade (pigment registry number Pb 15:3)
Titanium White (pigment registry number Pw6)
Burnt Umber (pigment registry number Pr7).
Use and cleaning
Use these as you would any oil paints. They take a few days to dry; the drying time depends on how thick the paint is, and the humidity of the air. It is recommended that medium is added to them. They are made with the maximum amount of pigment to oil and for this reason, some pigment grains may be visible.
To clean, no solvents are necessary. Wipe brushes and palette knives well with a rag or paper towel. A little oil on a rag will help loosen the paint. After wiping well, they can be washed with soap and warm water and left to air dry.
When not using the paint for a long time, it is recommended that they be closed tightly and sealed with tape. This way, they should last indefinitely. Before putting the lid on, wipe any paint off of the rim. If you have difficulty opening a jar, run it under hot water and run a metal palette knife between the cap and the glass.
