My practice spans various media, but with a focus on textiles, video, and paper. Materials carry meaning and history; I tune in to each to tell my own story in collaboration with the material and what it holds. Divergent avenues equally explore relationships to land and nature, home and heritage. Water is a recurring theme; it is a sanctuary synonymous with life. Our bodies, sacks of flesh, are mostly water. Spiritually, it is sacred, cleansing, promoting rebirth and growth. Embryos develop in watery wombs. How we are birthed and nurtured is key in feeling connected. Motherhood and caring feature strongly in my work, from a feminist perspective of seeking redress from historic and present inequalities but also as part of my quest to understand my own difficult familial relationships. I use knitting, sewing, and drawing for their slow meditative processes to imbue my physical gestures into the work. These intuitive approaches, while linking to the needle-based techniques of my heritage, are balanced with research in areas of feminist theory, biology, ecology, and literature. From abstract fabric collages and sculptures to video poems, the work offers new perspectives on safekeeping our engagement to nature and nurturing.
